Hotel Safety Tips Every Parent Should Know

Travelling with kids can be an exhilarating experience, but ensuring their safety in a hotel room requires extra vigilance.

As a mum of two and the owner of Kooshy Kids, I’ve learned some essential safety tips that every parent should know to keep the little ones safe and your mind at ease during your stay.

Inspect the Room Upon Arrival

When you first enter your hotel room, do a quick safety check. Look for any hazards such as exposed wires, sharp furniture edges, or small objects that curious toddlers might swallow. Make sure windows and balcony doors lock securely and that there are no gaps in window screens. Check the floor for any small items that previous guests might have left behind.

  • Tip: Test all locks, including bathroom and connecting room doors, to ensure they are working correctly.
Bring Your Own Childproofing Supplies

Hotel rooms aren’t always equipped with childproofing features. Packing a few basics like outlet covers, door knob covers, and corner guards can prevent common accidents. If you have a baby, consider bringing a portable cot or a travel bed for safe sleeping.

  • Tip: Adhesive hooks and removable wall mounts can be handy for keeping cords and other potentially hazardous items out of reach.
Keep Medications Out of Reach

Medications, including those that are prescribed and over-the-counter, should be stored out of reach of children.

A great way to do this is by utilising a high shelf or locking them in a suitcase. Never leave medications on bedside tables or counters where little hands can easily access them.

  • Tip: Use a travel-size lockbox for medications to ensure they are securely stored.
Utilise Technology for Extra Security

If you have older kids, it's a good idea to provide them with a way to contact you or hotel security in case of an emergency. Enable “share location” on devices so that you can all see each other's whereabouts. You can also bring along a travel/baby monitor to keep an eye on the room while you're not in the room.

  • Tip: Install a door alarm to alert you if the door is opened unexpectedly.
Secure the Doors

Always use the hotel room’s deadbolt and security latch, especially at night. You can also use a portable door lock for added security. If your kids are old enough to understand, teach them how to use these locks properly. I also hang a mug on the door handle which means if the door opens, the mug will fall and wake all of us.

  • Tip: Place a doorstop under the door for extra security while you sleep.
Educate Kids on Emergency Procedures

Take a moment to show your children where the nearest exits are located and explain the importance of knowing the emergency escape routes.

Instruct them on what to do in case of a fire or other emergencies.

  • Tip: Conduct a mini-drill to ensure your kids understand the emergency plan and can act quickly if needed.
Keep an Eye on Balconies

If your hotel room has a balcony, ensure it's safe for children. Check that the railings are secure and not too wide apart.

Never leave kids unattended on a balcony, and consider blocking access to it if you feel it's not safe.

  • Tip: Bring a portable safety gate to block balcony access if necessary.
Secure the Bathroom

Bathrooms can be hazardous for children due to slippery floors and hot water. Place a towel or mat on the floor to prevent slips, and always test the water temperature before allowing your child to bathe. If possible, bring a bath thermometer to ensure the water isn’t too hot.

  • Tip: Use non-slip bath stickers to prevent slips in the tub or shower.
Be Mindful of Room Service and Housekeeping

Inform the front desk not to deliver room service or housekeeping while you're out if your kids are in the hotel room.

This prevents strangers from entering your room when your children might be alone. Make sure kids know not to open the door for anyone without checking with you first.

  • Tip: Use the "Do Not Disturb" sign when you leave the room to ensure housekeeping doesn't enter while you're out.
Use Bed Rails

If your child is prone to rolling out of bed, consider using portable bed rails. They can be easily installed and provide an extra layer of security to prevent nighttime falls.

  • Tip: Place pillows along the edge of the bed as a temporary barrier if bed rails aren’t available.
Create a Safe Play Area

Designate a safe play area in the room where kids can have fun without getting into trouble. Bringing along a few toys and activities can keep them occupied.

The Kooshy Kids Ultimate Travel Kit includes engaging toys and games that can keep children entertained safely within the room.

  • Tip: Use a soft play mat to create a defined, cushioned play area.

By following these hotel safety tips, you'll ensure a secure environment for your children, making your trip stress-free and unforgettable. A little preparation can make a big difference in providing a safe and enjoyable stay for your family. Enjoy peace of mind and make the most of your family adventure!
